The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 0 program aims to improve applications to the NSF SBIR Phase I program. Eligible teams and companies participate in a 7-week National Innovation Corps (I-CorpsTM) cohort and received customized professional startup services (I-CorpsTM Go – more info listed below) to better prepare them for company formation and SBIR application. 

Prior teams and companies who have gone through a National I-CorpsTM cohort or previously received an SBIR award are disqualified from applying

 

Eligibility

To qualify teams should:

  • Have developed a deep technology
  • Not be otherwise eligible for a traditional I-CorpsTM Team program (i.e. no previous NSF award related to the technology within past 5 years)
  • Consist of at least two entrepreneurs (at least one of those with a deep technical focus) plus at least one mentor with industry (preferably startup) experience
  • Plan to form a company (upon completion of this program)
  • Plan for the Technical Lead in the team (the future Principal Investigator (PI) on the SBIR grant) to have 50%+ effort at the company
  • Plan to submit an NSF SBIR Phase I application in December 2018

If you are an existing company, you may qualify should the company:

  • Have developed a deep technology
  • Not be otherwise eligible for a traditional I-CorpsTM Team program (i.e. no previous NSF award related to the technology within past 5 years)
  • Consist of at least two entrepreneurs (at least one of those with a deep technical focus) plus at least one mentor with industry (preferably startup) experience
  • Plan for the Technical Lead in the company (the future Principal Investigator (PI) on the SBIR grant) to have 50%+ effort at the company
  • Plan to submit an NSF SBIR Phase I application in December 2018

I-CORPS GO

The I-CorpsTM Go Entrepreneur Assistance Program is a matching award program is offered by the NSF Midwest I-CorpsTM Node (MWIN) and targeted to entrepreneurs with technology that has a strong potential for commercialization through new company formation. I-CorpsTM Go offers a suite of first-year professional startup services including business development, legal setup, SBIR application, bookkeeping assistance, and marketing assistance. Selected companies are awarded 80% of the cost of the services up to $15,000 (no equity is taken).
